.KEY MESSAGES...

- A winter weather advisory remains in effect for much of the
Sandhills and north central Nebraska through Saturday morning due to
snow accumulations up to 4 inches (locally higher) and ice
accumulations up to a tenth of an inch.

- Colder air combined with stronger winds this weekend will drop
overnight wind chills into the negative single digits.

- The next system to potentially bring precipitation arrives Sunday
night, although any snow accumulations appear to be light.

- Rollercoaster temperatures expected for next week as a series of
weak systems move through the region.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Issued at 319 PM CST Fri Nov 28 2025

Wintry weather is on the way tonight and while not every place will
see the same hazards, just about the entire area will see some
impacts from this system. A developing low pressure system will push
push into the the High Plains by late afternoon with precipitation
arriving by early to mid evening. Across the south (mainly south of
Highway 2), precipitation will begin as rain, but as cooler air
moves in after sunset, it will quickly change over to light freezing
rain or freezing drizzle. While the freezing rain is only expected
to last a few hours before changing to snow, up to a tenth (0.1) of
an inch ice accumulation could still be see in certain locations.
This, in addition to snow accumulations of up to 2 inches, has
prompted the expansion of the Winter Weather Advisory to the south
as even this light of accumulations will be enough to cause
hazardous travel conditions across area roadways. Further to the
north, snow this morning has briefly come to an end, but will resume
during the evening. Areas north of Highway 2 have the greatest
potential to see the highest accumulating snow (up to 4 inches).
Locally higher amounts up to 5 inches or more could be seen across
Boyd and Holt counties where the more intense banding could occur.

Snow will continue through mid morning, but will begin to taper from
west to east by late morning. Light snow will continue across
extreme north central Nebraska through early afternoon before it
finally comes to an end by mid-afternoon.

In addition to precipitation hazards, as the low begins to deepen to
the east on Saturday, increasing winds return to north central and
western Nebraska. Northwest wind gusts increase by mid-moring with
gusts up to 40 to 45 mph by early afternoon. Winds will then
diminish after sunset Saturday evening. These strong winds could
prolong the winter impacts across area roadways by creating areas of
blowing and drifting snow as well as reduced visibility even across
areas that only received minimal snowfall. Those with travel plans
on Saturday should use extra caution and allow for extra time to get
to your destination.

A return to colder air will also accompany this winter system. The
cold air will begin to filter into the region as early as tomorrow
morning (Saturday morning). Lows tonight will drop into the teens
with wind chill values dropping into the negative single digits
across northwest Nebraska. By Saturday night, the cold air will be
fully pushed into Nebraska with lows dropping into the single digits
for most locations (northwest Nebraska may drop into the negative
single digits). While winds will already be starting to diminish,
some light wind combined with recent snowfall will still drop wind
chills into the sub-zero range. Those with outside plans should
considering limiting their time outdoors and dress in layers if they
must be outside.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Issued at 319 PM CST Fri Nov 28 2025

A shortwave trough will push through the High Plains on Sunday night
bringing another potential round of precipitation to the region.
This trough will push off the Front Ranges Sunday night and track
across the central Plains through Monday. It will bring another
chance of some light snow to the region, mainly southwest Nebraska.
At this time, accumulations appear to be light, but this may change
over the next couple of days.

Beyond Monday, a mostly dry forecast is expected through the end of
next week. Some of the latest guidance does suggest there may be
another small system moving through on Tuesday night, but confidence
remains very low in this system. Therefore, only included some
isolated slight chance PoPs (less than 20 percent) in the forecast
at this time.

Temperatures Sunday night through Friday remain inconsistent with
highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s on Monday and Wednesday and the
reminder of the days rising into the mid 30s to mid 40s. Low
temperatures Sunday night and Tuesday night remain similar with lows
dropping into the upper single digits to the mid teens. The only
difference is that Sunday night will see wind chill values in the
negative single digits. However, with Tuesday night winds being not
as strong, wind chills will remain in the single digits. Lows fall
into the 20s for the reminder of the nights.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z SUNDAY/...
Issued at 613 PM CST Fri Nov 28 2025

Wintry precipitation will arrive tonight across western and
northcentral Nebraska. Areas across north central Nebraska will
see light snow tonight into Saturday. Areas further to the south
will see freezing drizzle this evening mainly from 03Z to 08Z,
including the KLBF terminal. After 12Z Saturday, the snow will
begin to slowly push out of the region during the morning, but
northwest wind gusts up to 30 knots will create areas of blowing
and drifting snow resulting in additional visibility
restrictions. MVFR ceilings will lower to IFR tonight, improving
to MVFR after 13Z Saturday. Easterly winds tonight up to 15kts
will become north by 12Z Saturday, with gusts to 30kts. This
will create areas of blowing snow, especially across north
central Nebraska.
